This is a great article!! Our 9 year old son is usually less than enthusiastic about attending auctions and estate sales with us. In fact, when we first started I complained about how messy the house was. I said, "This place is a wreck! It's embarrassing!" He shot back, "What's embarrassing is 5 million antiques!"

I especially like your seed money idea! May have to give that a shot!

Loved this post. I think my kids were too old to be impressionable by the time I started doing this, but now that they realize my proceeds pay for their tuition, they don't complain quite so much about the junk that tends to accumulate in the family space. My daughter (18) helped me pack some boxes last week, but I wondered if that was a good idea when at the end she announced that she didn't think anyone would ever be able to open them ... a little more training is in order, I think.

I'm a product of this sort of bribery/trickery. I do happen to love the whole antiques/junking/searching now. I have even had my own online store for 2 years and I'm giving my first shot at being a vendor in a couple weeks. Of course I had to bribe my mom to help. It didn't take much!

I love this post so much! I'm going to share it with my husband as soon as he gets home from work. Our daughter is only 3 months old but we will start following these tips as soon as we can! :) I'm confident she'll be a little junk queen.

Sounds to me like you're doing great! LOVE that strawberry creamer. Is it still available? :)

I give the smalllest of my grandchildren 3x5 cards and have them copy Sorry, I am sold! and a frowny face. Even kindergardeners can do it -- Folks always comment on how cute they are when they find them hanging on a piece of furniture!

My son has been junking with me since he was old enough to walk. I remember the day he handed over a dollar to a lady for a small toy, a flashlight and two puzzles. He was stounded that she gave hem a QUARTER back too. Money in return PLUS stuff? I could see the little light bulb go off! He's 17 now, but he still l ikes thrift stores, auctions and yard sales. he knows what I sell and keeps his eye peeled. He brought me a vintage PINK tin dollhouse one day at Godwill - "Don't you like this sort of stuf," he said. Uh, YEAH! Anything he helps me find, carry, clean up or sort, he gets a commission. Money tallks!

No kids here to train but yours seem like they're ready to move on to the next step. Are they available to price and merchandise at my yard sale this weekend? I think it'll be a tremendous growth opportunity for them.

Your apron model is the cutest!

Our kids were allowed to sell items in our store. As they aged, they began to dislike the "ugly" work (cleaning, loading trailer etc). But now that they are grown they have come back to lovin' and sellin' all this junk!

Oh yes!!! It totally works. I never thought that my kids and I had a lot of fun playing super trump rather playing Farmville on facebook..

I love this! I'll never forget once when my oldest daughter was about 7 she brought me something from another aisle in the thrift store. She said, "Mom! I think this is mid century modern!". She was right and a little tear of pride rolled down my cheek.

My little guy Jack, 6, loves to garage sale with me. He has aptly named us the "Garage Sale Hunters". He loves antiques but said that I have to get rid of my stuff in the garage because there's not enough room for his bike and scooter. I think he may have heard his Daddy complaining one day....LOL
