My new partner-in-crime found this 1930's Smith Corona typewriter and square picnic basket for me at an estate sale a few weeks ago. That would be none other than my keen-eyed husband, Chris. He voluntarily took Maeve to a sale one Friday while I was working. He has some time to kill, ever since Finn started kindergarten. That's when Chris reduced his work hours so that one of us will always be home to get Finn on and off the bus each day. Chris is on his way to being Mr. Mom. And I love it! I just have to keep him from playing cards with my slutty neighbors.
On his first solo attempt at yard-saling, he found this typewriter for eight bucks. It even has the beloved "Floating Shift" key.
While I was out at yard sales last Saturday (with nothing to show for it), Chris took Maeve to her Ballet class. There was a huge yard sale next to the dance studio, where he found this chair for four dollars:
Here is my dilemma...is he really interested in antiquing? Or is he just trying to butter me up, with the hope that extra-special "favors" will be offered in return? I'll keep you posted.

I created a Facebook page for freshvintage. I swore that I would never join Facebook, but you can now officially call me a big fat liar. If any of you totally hip & cool readers are on Facebook, feel free to add yourself as a fan of freshvintage. I have some super-exclusive, never-before-seen photos on the page, as well as some blog post outtakes. I'll be adding to it frequently. And, guess what? You can even add your own photos to the page and start your own discussions.
If you aren't on Facebook already, consider this a perfect opportunity to join. I originally joined because my brother and sister were on it, and I wanted to see the photos of their families. But now I recognize its true value: looking up ex-boyfriends and the bitches that were mean to me in high school. Oh - and finding old friends.
No one can see any information about you, unless you add them as your friend. The only thing they can see is a tiny version of your profile picture and your name. You can change the settings and let everyone see everything in your profile, but that is mostly for celebrities or people in dire need of attention.
It is the same deal if you become a fan of freshvintage...I won't see any of your personal information - just your tiny profile photo and your name (and you won't see my personal profile). The only people who can see your profile are the friends that you approve. (Just to clarify: Fans are typically for groups/bands/businesses/websites and Friends are for an individual's personal page.)
So, don't be scared...sign up! My mom even has her own Facebook page, for Christ's sake!
P.S. Leave me a message on the freshvintage "wall" while you are there.

Does anyone read my blog via Bloglines? Are you getting an "invalid feed" error (with the red exclamation point)? I can't seem to figure out what is going on. If you are able to see updated feeds in Bloglines, can you leave me a quick comment and let me know? The feed seems fine in Google Reader.

Impressive, Christopher, very impressive. Some jewelery makers are fawning over those typewriter keys. I hope your slutty neighbors have seen Mr. Mom and don't think you just called them out.

Oh Colleen, he's a keeper....I'd play cards with him, and I don't even play cards. :) If that makes me a slut, then at least I'm a slut with good taste!

Too funny! And what a keeper you have there! My husband would NEVER do it - he'd buy crap at a garage sale and I mean CRAP. Like creepy picture frames etc. I mean dollar store frames. So, good for you! And the link to Mr. Mom - wow, didn't realize how long ago that was! how funny! The clothes, the glasses! And I may just have to check in to my facebook account now - I have one, but never go on it - now I'll try to find you!

Oh how I love the typewriter. I want it! I will pay the $8....LOL! I am very impressed with your husband, now if only I could get mine to take that initiative. :) Off to check out your facebook account!

"I just have to keep him from playing cards with my slutty neighbors."
You are freaking hilarious !!!

Just a note to let you know that I am a regular reader and, yes, I do get the feed through bloglines. (I realize now that that bypasses all of your advertising - I may re-think that). Anyway, I am having no trouble reading it. No red exclamation point or anything. Sorry I can't help. But you do a great blog. I enjoy it very much.

I really like the typewriter, but I must admit they creep me out big time. I don't know why. Maybe I picture the keys beginning to type on their own or something horrible like that! ANYWAYS, congrats on giving into facebook!

OMG I hate sites like Facebook but I'm currently on a binge. I can't get enough of it. I can't stop. So clearly I'm becoming a fan!!!

Bloglines is giving me the Red Exclamation!
I'd do favors for him if I were you. 'Cause if I was one of your slutty neighbors, you wouldn't want him coming to my sale.... ;)
Posted by: Amanda | October 15, 2008 at 01:19 AM
Oh my...he is a keeper!!! Mine actually does that for me too! He'll even go through junk piles that are sitting out on garbage day...I just love that man!
Hugz,
Michele

Just found your site and love it! I am always on the look out for a great vintage piece. What a great typewriter. We found a Royal 1050's portable about a month ago-free. My children are having a ball typing on everything from napkins to leaves and leaving messages for each other.

just a quick note - love your blog. i have subscribed to you via bloglines but i am getting the same red exclamation point on your blog as well as several others, including my own blog. i've written to typepad and they say that they've validated my feed is fine (I"m sure yours is too) and that bloglines has a known issue with reading some folks' blogs. so i'd recommend switching your service for more consistency, and perhaps promoting a diff subscription site for others reading your blog.

OMG, I just love that chair!! Mike surprised me for Valentine's day with Pyrex. I'm pretty sure he was buttering me up too.

Do whatever is necessary - any and all favors. He's good. You want more of what he's bringing. Love your blog.

Enjoyed your blog. Even if Chris isn't interested in antiquing at least he knows a good buy when he sees one! He's done really well with those purchases. Surely that is worth a few extra-special favors!!!

For the past week I have had nothing but trouble with bloglines. It has not updated your blog for me in forever (I just had to create a google reader account.) But you are not alone, some days it is not updating ANY Feeds at all. Sigh.

Love your blog... it's so entertaining.
My bet is on special "favors"... because after all.. he is a guy.
:)

Who cares what the motive is when he's as good a looker as he is.
Plus, who doesn't love a Mr. Mom?!?

I'm thinking I might need to relocate to your area just for these amazing deals you guys always seem to get...

Beautiful! I see that you got yourself a "vintage collector" title :)
In fact, it's not bad at all, some people buy vintage things like those over the Internet or at farmers' markets over the country.
But hey, think twice! Will you really sit on a chair like that and write in such a typewriter?
It's free, yes, but sometimes it's not necessarily "free to get", if you get me:)
